2019/2020 Young Baroque Artists Competition Winners (from left to right): Robert Gau (piano), Lisa Chasanov (mezzo-soprano), Benjamin Keating (piano), Nick Bonn (Guitar)

Our annual competition opportunity for high school-age students studying Baroque music. The winners gain valuable performing experience in a BACH season concert and win a cash prize!

Information on past competitions:

The competition is open to any Illinois resident who will be 13 to 18 years of age on March 1 of the current year, and who is not yet attending college. Younger students may petition to compete.

Candidates should prepare one or more pieces or movements composed between 1600 and 1800, totaling 5 to 10 minutes in length. Performing by memory is optional except for singers. Accompanists may be live or prerecorded, but should be audible in the video.

The music should be sung by the type of voice or played on the instrument for which it was composed, except that piano may be substituted for harpsichord or for orchestral accompaniment. All exceptions to these rules must be approved by the Competition Committee in advance. If an accompanist is needed, the candidate will be expected to provide one.

Ensemble groups of two or more soloists may also enter.

Awards

  • There will be a $300, $250 and $200 dollar award for our YBAC winners.

  • Winners will appear live in concert with the BACH choir
